The city was established in 1776 by Spanish settlers, who constructed the Prison near the Golden Gate area and the Mission of Saint Francis of Assisi. After becoming U.S. territory in 1849, the city experienced the gold rush period, becoming the most significant city on the American west coast. However, in 1906, a devastating earthquake and fire destroyed a large portion of the city, with approximately 80% of it being ruined.

To monitor the city effectively, it is advised to pay attention to the weekly test conducted every Tuesday at noon. Over 100 sirens are strategically placed throughout the city, including in buildings, the city center, and residential areas. Originally installed during World War II, these sirens are still in operation today to warn residents of potential emergencies such as earthquakes or tsunamis originating from the Pacific Ocean. Should you hear these sirens at any other time besides Tuesday at noon, it is recommended to seek additional information through online sources or television broadcasts.

This is one of the most fascinating things to do in San Francisco, as it is uncommon to tour a federal prison located on an island.

Alcatraz Island started as a military base before becoming known as the most secure federal prison globally. The prison opened in January 1934 and shut down in March 1963 due to high expenses. While no successful escapes were reported during its operation, there were some escape attempts.

Competition for the tour is strong, so plan ahead and secure your ticket early – check prices and purchase here. Upon reaching the island, remember to pick up your complimentary audioguide in Portuguese, which provides detailed accounts of both prisoners and staff, enhancing your overall experience.

Tip: Remember to bring a warm jacket because the island gets very chilly.

Hilton San Francisco Union Square

Hilton San Francisco Union Square

We chose to stay at Hilton San Francisco Union Square because of its excellent location.

Hilton Union Square is located near Union Square and the tram, offering spacious rooms with classic decor and amenities such as a coffee maker, HD TV, MP3 player, and a comfortable king bed.

The hotel provides complimentary Wi-Fi, though breakfast is not part of the package and comes at an additional cost of USD 42. However, it is considered worthwhile due to the diverse offerings. We decided to stay at Cavallo Point Lodge in Sausalito, which is a remarkable resort-type hotel located in the Recreative Area of the Golden Gate National Park. Avoid the Tenderloin neighborhood if you have any concerns about the city.

The neighborhood center, which includes Union Square and City Hall, is not the safest or most attractive area in the city due to its high number of homeless people. It is advisable to avoid spending too much time there as the few establishments present often serve as shelters for the homeless. Despite this, it is generally not considered a dangerous area, as residents typically go about their own business peacefully.
