Moreton Island, located around 40 km from Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia, is known as the third largest sand island globally. It is also referred to by its original name, Mulgumpin, as named by the local Aboriginal people, the Ngugi of the Quandamooka community.

Referred to as Brisbane’s backyard, almost all of the island is included in the Moreton National Park, showcasing stunning natural scenery and the renowned shipwrecks that have transformed into a haven for coral and sea creatures. To get around, it is necessary to have a 4×4 vehicle, so it is recommended to rent one beforehand or arrange transportation ahead of time.

There are many fantastic things to do on Moreton Island, but going there without experiencing the wrecks is like being in Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower. To ensure you don’t miss out, Tangalooma Island Resort provides accommodation, a range of activities, and island tours, including the Snorkel the Wrecks Tour. This tour includes transportation and all necessary snorkeling gear.

Those who have their own snorkeling gear can head to the dive site, while those who prefer not to dive can opt for kayaking or stand up paddle boarding to see the wrecks. These activities take place at Tangalooma Beach. Further north, there are the champagne pools, which are natural pools surrounded by rocks.

Don’t forget to visit the dunes of the Tangalooma Desert, where you can sandboard and explore the Blue Lagoon, a freshwater lake with healing essential oils on its shores.

Fans of stories will appreciate exploring Queensland’s original lighthouse, Cape Moreton Lighthouse, and exploring Honeymoon Bay to hunt for historical artifacts from World War II in a natural setting.

In the evening, you can feed wild dolphins that come near the coast and are familiar with the resort staff. The activity is carefully managed by professionals to ensure it is done respectfully, so you can feel confident about participating.

Our colleague Thiago Correa recently visited Moreton Island and shared his one-day itinerary experience. Explore further information and his feedback.

I arrived at the beautiful destination by taking a ferry from Holt Street Wharf in Brisbane. The crossing took about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and I found myself in a picturesque location surrounded by dunes, shrubs, and forests, with the turquoise waters of the Coral Sea all around.

Moreton is a tiny island where you can explore everything in a single day, just like I did.

For those seeking a more relaxed experience and looking to stay overnight in the area, there are accommodation choices available like the Tangalooma Island Resort. Those seeking adventure can opt for camping on the island, which provides all the essential facilities.

Even if you choose not to remain on the island, the resort provides various packages for visitors to discover the island’s attractive sights, allowing you to select activities that suit your preferences best.

I chose to take the quad bike tour to experience the beauty of the dunes and explore the local nature. Additionally, I tried kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

The ships that ran aground on the shores of Tangalooma are now submerged underwater and have become artificial reefs that provide a habitat for numerous vibrant fish species.

During my visit, I went diving among the boats to explore the diverse marine ecosystem and even spotted a small shark.

The late afternoon is a beautiful time for nature lovers. It offers the opportunity to admire the sunset behind the Glass House Mountains while relaxing on sunbeds on the white sandy beaches of Moreton. As night falls, you can also enjoy the sight of the starry sky illuminated by dusk.

Check out all of our advice.
