Discover the top recommendations for activities to do in Maragogi, including visits to natural pools, the zoo, a cookie factory, a viewpoint, and a buggy ride, in addition to enjoying the beaches!

Maragogi may be a small town, but arriving without a plan can still be awkward. Upon my arrival, I was immediately drawn to the first beach I saw due to its stunning sea color. However, I soon realized that this might not have been the best choice. To help others avoid this situation, I decided to create a post offering tips on what to do in Maragogi so that you can arrive prepared and know where to go.

Maragogi’s main attractions revolve around its beaches and natural pools. Visitors can enjoy activities like buggy and boat rides that showcase the beauty of the area’s natural surroundings. Additionally, professions such as bulldozer operators and boatmen are common in the region, with many of them working throughout the city.

I booked all my tours through WS Tur Receptive as it was part of the CVC package. It was more convenient to have everything arranged in advance, saving me from the hassle of finding trustworthy agencies and negotiating prices. Moreover, WS provides top-notch service with local guides and drivers, complimentary beach club access, and air-conditioned vehicles, which was especially beneficial in the hot city.

Key attractions in Maragogi

We have curated a list of the most stunning attractions in Maragogi. From beaches to zoos, this city offers something for everyone, catering to a diverse audience of all ages.

Maragogi’s natural swimming pools

The top attraction to visit in Maragogi should definitely be the natural pools. They are the city’s main tourist spot and offer a marvelous experience. It is important to note that people of all ages can enjoy this ride as the pools are shallow, calm, and safe, making it ideal for children.

To visit the natural pools, you will need to take a boat trip, which can be a catamaran, speedboat, or schooner. I personally used WS Tur (included in my CVC package) and I strongly suggest it. It is not feasible to go on your own due to the area being an environmental reserve, with restrictions on the number of visitors. Additionally, it is crucial to check the tide schedule before heading out.

There are multiple pool choices available in the city, including Galés, Taocas, Barra Grande, and Ponta de Mangue. Each pool is stunning, with variations in size, depth, and entry point. Further details about each of these options can be found below.

Wales: It is the most well-known and biggest beach in Maragogi, making it a popular choice for many visitors. Situated across from the Salinas Maragogi All Inclusive Resort, it is ideal for diving enthusiasts due to its greater depth and the marine life found in the small caves.

Taocas: Your journey begins at Burgalhau Beach, which is an ideal spot for observing fish nearby. Taocas is the smallest of the Maragogi reefs, and in contrast to Galés, it is shallower, offering a quieter and less crowded experience.

POST:  Insurance brand travel: Information about travel insurance

Large sandbar: This location is ideal for families with children as it is the shallowest area in Maragogi. The famous Way of Moses, a sandbank that extends from the shore for miles, can be found here when the tide is low, ranging between 0.0 and 0.2. Typically, this spot can be explored when the tide level is up to 0.6, with the usual maximum being 0.5.

Tip: Recently, access to Ponta de Mangue has been allowed, with the usual starting point being either Ponta de Mangue beach or Peroba beach. On my visit, I took a speedboat from Maré Beach in Maragogi to reach the location. The journey offers a stunning cinematic landscape, with the sea becoming increasingly transparent as you venture further into the ocean. Despite the rainy weather on the day of my tour, the beauty of the region was still incredible.

Paraphrase: The Beaches of Maragogi

The beaches in Maragogi shine brightly due to their exceptional beauty, characterized by a clear blue sea with a pleasant temperature that truly lives up to its reputation.

Before heading to the beach, it is crucial to check the tidal chart as the sea conditions and appearance can vary significantly depending on the tide level. During low tide, the beach will have a wider sandy area with fewer waves and shallower water. Conversely, high tide results in rougher seas and deeper water.

Another important point is to adhere to the distinctive features of the beaches, as there are numerous choices within the city, each with its own unique qualities. Here is a brief overview of some of the top beaches in Maragogi to help decide which one to explore first.

Antunes Beach is renowned as one of the top beaches in the northeast due to its tranquil and somewhat isolated setting, simple infrastructure, convenient accessibility without the need for hiking, and its stunningly paradisiacal appearance. Even on a rainy day, the sea maintained a clear, crystalline quality during my visit.

Barra Grande Beach is famous in the area for its formation resembling the Way of Moses. During low tide, the beach features expansive sandbanks that create a natural pool. Despite being somewhat secluded, there are sufficient facilities available to enjoy the beach, such as the Barra Way where I stayed.

Xáreu Beach is located 8 km from the city center and offers a secluded option for beachgoers who prefer fewer crowds. Surrounded by lush nature and coconut trees along the shore, it is also referred to as “Bruna’s bane” after actress Bruna Lombardi visited the beach years ago.

Maragogi Beach is located in the center of Maragogi and is surrounded by restaurants, bars, and kiosks. While it may not be the best for swimming, it offers a good infrastructure and is worth a visit for trying local cuisine, exploring Burgalhau Beach nearby, and taking boat trips.

Ponta de Mangue Beach is situated between the bustling Antunes Beach and the more secluded Peroba Beach, making it a versatile choice for visitors seeking a bit of both worlds. With a handful of kiosks and less crowded sands, it offers a balanced experience for beachgoers.

Peroba Beach is ideal for those looking for a peaceful environment, as it is secluded with no facilities. Visitors are advised to bring a snack and appreciate the serene beauty of the location.

Selecting a beach club is a great idea for enhancing your enjoyment of Maragogi’s beaches with added convenience. Typically, these establishments provide amenities such as restrooms, showers, dining options, reading materials, and even guided tours. In other words, they have everything you need to make the most of your beach day.

I stayed at the Maré Beach Club, where I took buggy and speedboat rides to the natural pool. I arrived early, spent time at the beach, had lunch, relaxed on the hammock, and then participated in the scheduled tours. Since I was with the WS Tur Receptive, I had complimentary day use and only needed to pay for what I consumed. A recommendation is to try the cocadas sold at the entrance of the establishment (by the souvenir shop), as they are delicious!

Other beach clubs in the area include Caminho da Barra, Meraki Beach, and Casa da Praia Maragogi.

Exploring Maragogi by buggy.

Certainly, you will encounter numerous buggies traversing the city streets, which is a must-see activity in Maragogi. These buggy tours typically follow various routes that include visits to different beaches, with drivers stopping at strategic locations for photo opportunities and to appreciate the sea.

One interesting aspect is the presence of unique and creative photo frames at the designated stops, often crafted from coconut bark or tree trunks. Upon parking the buggy, the horns indicate the ideal photo spot, and visitors can take photos themselves. I thought this was a very original touch!

The tour I went on lasted approximately two hours and included stops at three locations: Antunes beach, Caminho da Barra (along the beach of Barra Grande, where the Way of Moses is located), and a spot between the beaches where we took a photo of a buggy inside a heart made of coconuts. I booked the tours with WS Tur Receptive and CVC.

You might be curious as to why Maragogi cookies are included in this list, right? They are a beloved tradition in the area, so once you visit, you’ll likely want to try them and even bring some back as souvenirs. I purchased several, including some to share with my family, allowing them to experience the flavors of the region.

The Maragogi Bubbles is a prominent company in the city, known for its distinctive yellow and orange packaging seen in various locations. In addition to this, there are several other coconut cracker factories, locally known as gum cakes, located across the municipality. Sister Marlene recently visited and tried the freshly baked cookies, providing a unique experience suitable for all ages. This activity is perfect for rainy days or when you prefer not to go to the beach.

Sister Marlene’s factory is well-known, and all the manufacturing is done by hand. The coconut is carefully prepared and added to the dough, and the shaping of the dough is done lovingly by the owner’s family members. Upon arrival, the delightful scent of coconut immediately caught my attention.

And I can guarantee you that the cookies tasted even better after observing the entire preparation process and witnessing the shapes emerge from the hot and fragrant oven. So, it is also a pleasant and customary activity to engage in when visiting Maragogi.

Ecopark Sun and Sea Zoo

One of the additional activities to enjoy in Maragogi, aside from its beaches, is a visit to Ecopark Sol and Mar. This zoo, situated on Barra Grande beach near Pousada Sol and Mar, houses rescued animals that are unable to be released back into the wild. Visitors can see snakes, jaguars, alpacas, monkeys, and various birds up close, interact with them, and take photographs.

The Ecopark is available for visitors daily from 9am to 4pm. The admission fee was R$70 for adults and R$35 for children aged 5 to 14, students, teachers, and seniors aged 60 and above when I visited. It is recommended to verify the current prices on the website.

View of a cruise ship

If you have a love for landscapes, the Cruise View, also known as High of Boa Vista, is a great choice for activities in Maragogi. Situated at one of the city’s highest points, this location provides a sweeping view of the beaches and the surrounding natural scenery.

The observation point is located at Pousada Alto do Cruzeiro, which features a restaurant and a handicraft store. Visitors are welcome to access the site even if they are not staying at the hostel, but a conservation fee is charged for non-guests (at the time of my visit it was R$ 2). Although reaching the location may be a bit challenging, it is just a 15-minute drive from Maragogi’s town center.

Residents of Saint Benedict

São Bento village is a popular attraction in Maragogi for visitors interested in immersing themselves in the local culture. Located nearby is a serene and simple beach that appeals to travelers seeking a peaceful escape from the city. This beach features a spot known as the Crown of St. Benedict, where visitors can admire coral formations and crystal-clear waters.

In addition, this area is famous for its gum cake factories, where the aforementioned cookies made with coconut are produced. The location boasts a peaceful atmosphere reminiscent of a fishing village, with interesting historical sites to explore, including the Monastery of São Bento, the Crôas de São Bento, local eateries, the popular Mariscada Festival, and the mouth of the Salgado River.

Craft Fair – Event where artisans sell their handmade creations.

There isn’t much talk about the Maragogi Craft Fair, possibly because it is more understated and lacks grandeur. However, for those interested in exploring local art or purchasing a souvenir, it is definitely worth a visit!

The tents feature items made by local artisans, clothing, beach bags, traditional food, and even some bars and restaurants nearby offering live music. This fair on Maragogi beach’s boardwalk, along Avenida Senator Rui Palmeira, is a great nighttime activity option in Maragogi.

Activities to experience in Maceió

It’s beneficial to be aware that Maragogi is surrounded by neighboring towns in close proximity, making it common for visitors to explore beyond just the municipality. For example, within a fifteen-minute to an hour and a half drive, you can reach Japaratinga, Porto de Pedras, Patacho beach, Tatuamunha, and São Miguel dos Milagres, all part of the renowned ecological route.

The capital city, Maceió, is just a two and a half hour car ride away, with numerous tours available to explore the city and its pristine beaches. Suggestion for navigating the tidal board in Maragogi

It is crucial to check the tidal board when organizing trips to beaches and natural pools. The appearance of the sea varies significantly between low and high tides, resulting in different experiences depending on the sea level and the moon phase (particularly during full and new moons).

In summary, the key advice is to visit the tide board website and check when the sea level is between 0.0 and a maximum of 0.5. It is not recommended to visit when the numbers are higher, as the conditions may not be suitable for exploring coves and beaches that do not resemble natural pools.

The boatmen are on board and have already planned their departures based on the tide. They also ensure that visitors spend an average of an hour and a half in the pools before returning safely before the tide rises again.
